Review of Six Black Candles

Six Black Candles by Des Dillon (Goldfish Productions) at the Ryan Centre Cinema,
Stranraer on Friday 13 May 2011

Des Dillon brings his perceptive observations of the quirky and eccentric life
of a Catholic family to the stage in his production of Six Black Candles. Author
and playwright Des now lives in a peaceful sea-side village in south west
Scotland but his material comes from his years living in Scotland’s central belt
and he has a real ear for the local vernacular, bringing modern Scottish idiom
to life.

The play is set in Caroline’s home where her five sisters gather with their Maw
and their not-so-mad Irish granny who leads the proceedings to wreak revenge
on the babysitter Stacie Gracie who has run off with Caroline’s husband.

The six sisters have beautifully delineated individual characters and poignantly
show the stresses and strains of everyday life but with wonderfully comic
effect. Add in lots of black magic, a frozen heid in the fridge, a priest lacking
nous and lots of vodka and you have a volatile cocktail that had the audience
laughing out loud.
