A European network of festivals, called In-Situ, has announced UZ Arts will be in charge of Meta, a new fund that will use the significant sum to create new work for urban public spaces.
In Situ has given the money to UZ so they can be the “commissioning agent” for Meta in the UK and Ireland.
Meta will commission work over five years until 2016, building links across 19 cultural organisations from 14 European countries, particularly in central Europe.
The funding will support “large scale artistic offerings” in public spaces, urban walks and city tours and collaboration between artists in different cities.
Neil Butler, director of UZ Arts, said: “Over the past seven years In-Situ has provided major benefits for British artists and audiences, particularly for those in Scotland, where our office is based.
“It has been the catalyst for some incredible productions begun and premiered in Scotland which then toured Europe’s major festivals – projects like La Banda Europa’s Beyond the Wolf, Boilerhouse’s 3600, The World Famous Full Circle and Mischief La Bas’ Painful Creatures.
“Each production has been a pan-European collaboration, bringing together artists from all over Europe and introducing Scottish audiences to outstanding international artists. The fund has also enabled us to bring many European artists and companies to Scottish audiences.”
