An excellent interview by Ruth Barker with Charles Jencks about his personal history with the Gretna Landmark project, his approach to risk, track records and the thistle.

The Solway remains the most important and unspoilt estuary for wildlife in Europe – and the ‘debatable lands’ that the motorway crosses have a long and turbulent history which the proposed blot will desecrate. What is it with Charles Jenks – does he not know about light pollution, energy saving, climate change, small is beautiful – where is he coming from! Maybe he should read Cormac McCarthy and Margaret Atwood. ‘Art’ of any kind this will not be – just another wasteful intrusion. Could the proposal guidelines not have insisted on something more appropriate than another Mr Big type structure. Couldn’t we have a small sign saying that although the competition was fun for some, any monies involved have been spent on improving water supplies in Africa – anything really, just something more appropriate.

interesting bit about D+G artists not wanting to comment....
The Artworld speaks out about Gretna. 5 leading figures from Glasgow School of Art have written a letter to the Herald http://tinyurl.com/3zy9m9n - it will be interesting to see if there is a response for the pro camp.
ReplyDeleteIs there a pro camp?
