The Salon, Thomas Tosh, Tuesday Nov 15th 2011

The Salon returns to Thomas Tosh in Thornhill next Tuesday, November 15th at 7.30pm. Paul O’Keefe promises a ‘relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy some fine writing by authors who are very fine performers of their work. Fine wine too – we’re licensed now!’
The season’s opener promises to be very special indeed, featuring two local poets, Hugh McMillan and JoAnne McKay, together with Glasgow-based author Alan Gillespie
Hugh McMillan, from Penpont, has a long list of publications and awards to his name, and in the last year has given sell-out performances in Poetry Festivals including Wigtown and the Stanza International Poetry Festival in St Andrews. His ‘New and Selected Poems’ is due out in 2012. Ali Smith once described a reading of his as ‘one of the funniest and best I have ever seen’.

Alan Gillespie is originally from Fife and now lives in Glasgow. A prolific short-story writer, he is currently working on his novel about Scotland’s first rock n’ roll tragedy.  In October 2011, Alan was one of the editors of ‘A Thousand
Cranes: Scottish Writers for Japan.’ This collection of short stories, poetry and memories of Japan is packed with all the humour, joy and passion of Japanese life. All the profits from its sale go to the Japanese Red Cross to help with the ongoing relief efforts for the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The book will be available at The Salon.

JoAnne McKay was runner-up in this year’s Callum Macdonald Award with her pamphlet, ‘Venti’. JoAnne will be launching her latest pamphlet, ‘Grave with Lights’, at The Salon. This, like ‘Venti’ is a hand-made artists’ book. JoAnne says. ‘I was extremely fortunate, again, to find an artist willing to lend me his images for the book. A late night knock on a door in the village of Carronbridge led me to the sublime work of Victor Henderson; his art immediately struck a chord with me and resonated with my writing.’ Further collaboration occurred with the creation of hand-sewn slip-cases for the book – these were made by the Nithsdale Design Collective.

The Salon starts at 7.30pm and entry is free. Thomas Tosh is now licensed, and the café and bar will be open for the evening.

I will love you
black and blue.
I will.
I will.
I do.
I do.
