Writer-In-Residence Opportunity: Polmont Young Offender's Institution

Fortnightly or Weekly, 3 hours, Friday Mornings

An opportunity exists to join the successful Writer-In-Residence group at HMP Polmont. The groups work within the Personal Social Development Unity (not college) with ages 16-21. The ethos of the programme is rooted in the Theatre-In-Education approach, and offers flexibility for serious writers to lead and develop all genres of written work within a group. The setting is safe, secure and pleasant, with enthusiastic young people. The programme boasts a 99% non-reoffending rate, awards for the Koestler prize, recognition by the First Minister, participation in StAnza, and enjoys a healthy relationship with prison officials.

The ideal writer candidate(s) will have relevant experience as a writer, teacher, publisher or a combination of these. Experience with group facilitation with vulnerable young people is helpful. CRB clearance will be required. New funding opportunities have recently became available, but as we apply for these, this is a voluntary role with reasonable travel expenses covered. Training and supervision provided.
