Starting on 7th July and running all the way through to the 3rd August – three different age groups will have the chance to develop performing arts skills with qualified practitioners in Dumfries town centre. Running for the third year – this year’s programme includes opportunities for children as young as 5 – at Electric Theatre Workshop’s studio’s in Dumfries.
Dumfries Youth Theatre, part of Electric Theatre Workshop’s foundation is Dumfries & Galloway’s premier performing arts school for young people aged between 5 –18 and was originally set up more than 15 years ago.
The one week Summer course for 5 – 8 year olds runs from 7th – 12th July each day from 9 am until 3pm and is jam packed with singing, dancing, puppetry and drama workshops. This course is suitable for absolutely any child who is interested in trying our theatre and performance. It costs only £45 for the whole week.
The two week Summer course for 9 – 12 year olds runs from 7th – 21st July each day from 9 am until 5pm and this course teaches young people the basic fundamentals of performing arts by creating a piece of theatre which is presented at the end of the course. The workshop schedule includes script based work as well as characterisation skills. It costs £45 per week.
The four week Summer course for 13 – 18 year olds is our flagship course which is now its third year and puts young people through an intensive theatre course which will include the creation of a brand new piece of theatre. Young people work from 9 am in the morning right through until 10pm at night, including weekends. Workshops are taught by some of our in-house staff but we also bring in outside specialists who help us challenge the young people taking part. It’s not for the faint hearted and young people are expected to raise funds for the course fees themselves. Space is limited for this programme.
