The ninth
Lockerbie Jazz Festival is spreading its wings.
In addition to a programme packed with high quality jazz and
blues acts in the host town, the Festival features events across Annandale and
Eskdale - with a series of concerts in Moffat and a music/dinner in Annan.
The
Festival programme features the BBC Big Band playing music from the
great American songbook with special guest, Georgina Jackson; Scottish
Blues’ finest singer, Maggie Bell; the return of New Orleans
clarinet superstar, Evan Christopher; and Del Amitri guitarist Kris
Dollimore, playing the Del Amitri Restaurant in Annan.
Jazz
stars are queuing up to play in Moffat on Sunday with saxophonist John
Burgess kicking things off with his specially assembled quartet playing a
tribute to Alex Welsh. Then the world premiere of a duo between New
Orleans clarinetist and top Scottish jazz pianist, Brian Kellock.
Virtuoso violinist Seonaid Aitken ends the day with her Django Reinhardt
inspired band Rose Room.
Dom Pipkin and the Ikos play Lockerbie Town Hall on Saturday 27th September |
Thanks to
the support of the Holywood and Robertson Trusts the Festival has put together
a range of youth and community projects across Annandale and Eskdale, with this
year featuring young jazz groups from across the region - young musicians
getting the opportunity to learn from and play alongside professional musicians
from the BBC Big Band.
Rose Room play the Moffat House Hotel on Sunday 28th September |
The
centrepiece of the Festival is Take 5, a five hour, three stage musical
extravaganza which features a host of bands playing jazz from Count Basie to
Stan Getz; newly formed youth bands; plenty of blues (look out for Deluxe
Blues!) and headlined by Dom and the Ikos – a
fantastically hot New Orleans funk and blues style band driven by killer piano
player Dom Pipkin – taking time off from his regular gig with Paloma
Faith and teaching Jonathan Ross to play the piano.
