The Stove an update....

"Ceci n'est pas une.." by Will Levi Marshall

I have just come back from a productive meeting at the "Stove" (former Happit).
A summary of what was discussed is a s follows:-

We are working on a proposal to let the the whole building. Floor 1 being a Artist Cafe Floor 2 a space for happenings in the broadest sense of the word. Floor 3 spaces to let out to institutions (Glasgow Univ. have expressed and interest) and individuals (photo studio?) It is hoped that floors 1 and 3 will produce a modest income (at least wash their face) to fund floor 2 and the fun that happens there.

The council have been supportive and offered a business consultant to help us with feasability and or business plan. Meetings arranged to find out more about the scope of this offer.

A 'green' policy will form part of best practice adopted by the the stove although it will not be a tag line to the project and we will focus our efforts toward the core 'Artist Cafe' plan.

The procurement of fixtures and fitting for the Stove and cafe will wherever possible be through employing local artists ie artists tableware as above, or some tables by a local craftsperson. Anyway apologies for blowing my own trumpet but you get the idea.

We are looking into forming a constitution appropriate for our needs and finding some seed funding to cover costs of forming a LTD company or whatever.

It is likely that we will also form some sub groups to cost out the plan and we will contact people with expertise in specific fields (furniture makers etc) to help so you may be contacted about this!

I have probably missed out some stuff so please edit comment to your hearts content but I though I'd better post something while my minds fresh...... off to my next meeting now, so I'll post and be damned.

  1. good feeling to be meeting in the new Artists Boardroom! Also it felt like an important shift in the way we are dealing with this project....definitely going forward with purpose.

I was able to work the conversation round to The Stove with the Culture Minister at lunch in Kirkcudbright...we presented it as part of a regional cultural vision ie much needed activity in Dumfries and a 'gateway' to the treasures of the wider region - Fiona Hyslop did not choke on her scampi....so we're taking that as a good sign??!
