Dumfries Youth Theatre

Dumfries Youth Theatre is a FREE Youth Theatre Company which is delivered by a team of 3 professional theatre specialists in Dumfries. It is aimed at young people between the ages of 12-18, and runs on Tuesday night’s at The Oasis Centre from 16.30 until 18.30pm

The company were recently involved in the Opening Show at the Big Burns Supper Festival 2012, which included the group collaborating with a number of different industry professionals and performance groups from the town and their performance broadcast to a global audience on the internet, as well as over 1200 people who watched it in the outdoors. 

DUmfries Youth Theatre focuses on new, original and contemporary pieces of performance which challenge the participant and the audience alike. The entire programme is centred on Young Actor Training which is built into the weekly workshops and provides participants with a safe environment to explore themselves in a number of different ways. Participants will be guided through creative a process, which increases imagination, and develops confidence and self esteem. Participants also learn production skills such as stage/costume design as well as production and management skills. This training is all delivered by trained professionals who are passionate about Theatre and Performance in all its forms and the benefits it brings to young people.

The free service is part of Youth Work Nithsdale, Community Learning and Development Service at Dumfries & Galloway Council. 

Dumfries Youth Theatre is led by Production Leader- Laura Hill, Movement Leader, Justin Hyslop and Acting Leader- Graham Main says, “This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who has an interest in theatre and performance to come and get involved in a programme that is unrivalled anywhere else. Thanks to the support of Dumfries & Galloway Council, the entire service is free and we have a cool space to present some cutting edge performances”

The company are now looking for more young people to take part with the group and further work. They are currently designing a new interactive show which will be presented in June of this year.   1. Life, Love and Liberty open day Saturday April the 21st
    Hello l am currently working with Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival to produce an exciting new event which sits outside their normal festival schedule. The event called Life, love and liberty will be three promenade theatre performances taking place on the 21st and 22nd July. The performances recognise the importance of Dumfries as Burns Song shop and celebrates the latter years of his life.
    I would like to invite you to an open day on the 21st April in Greyfriars church Dumfries to find out more about this very special project. We are looking for people with a variety of skills to assist, these include Stewards, Costume makers, set designers, youth workers, actors, actresses, singers, musicians and people of influence within the Burns and theatre communities.
    The celebrated actor John Cairney has been specially commissioned to produce the script and will act as the events Artistic Director.
    John indicated that the following roles would be key in a cast of over 30 performers.

    Leading actors - to play Burns and Jean. Actors rather than singers but actor-singers rather than singer-actors. Age range - 35/37.

    Supporting actors - (Approximate ages in brackets) Maxwell (30) Syme (40) McCracken (40) Mitchell (50) John Lewars (25)
    Jessie Lewars (20) Maria Riddell (30) Jean Lorimer (25 and singer). Actress to play 'Rosalind' in play excerpt.

    Small-part players - 2 male citizens, 2 female citizens, 4 male Loyalists, 2 gentlemen, Duke Senior and Mr Sutherland.

  2. My daughter showed an interest in this event at Greyfriars, was much encouraged, provided all her details and never received as much as an email so who are you kidding !
