Electric Theatre - Red or Dead

Electric Theatre Dumfries have not stopped since their creation in 2011 - presenting two site-specific theatre pieces as part of the Big Burns Supper – and developing work which will be toured both nationally and regionally

Red or Dead is a new play by writer Graham Main which focuses on the perception of Dumfries from four different characters, each from different parts in time, using performance technology to create a world in which they all unite.

Red or Dead is a play about perception and looking beyond what we initially see, and why people’s deep rooted prejudice often blinds them from the injustice in their own lives and that of their community. It follows the experience of a young Calvin Harris who wants to run away from home – as he collides with three other characters, each of whom, have a separate motives for coming back to Dumfries.

Graham Main, Director said “We have taken the play from its original epic form and deliberately placed it into its most intimate opposite, as an exploration of how the audience reaction is different – what audiences will see in the second phase of the play is slightly more challenging than the first time we presented it in January. The fundamental difference this time round is the use of an old building to tell the story in a different way. Audiences have come to expect to see theatre inside a theatre and the latest performance takes place in an old house. Each show has an audience capacity of 10 people. It becomes site-specific because the theatre almost becomes redundant as a venue, and we transfer the acting and storytelling into that space – we have also put the show on late night to give the audience the opportunity to experience performance later at night”
