Dumfries and Galloway Fine Arts Society

The society started life in 1922, and few Fine Arts Societies can have had such distinguished founders. Dumfries and Galloway Fine Arts Society (DAGFAS) arose out of the renowned artists' colony of Kirkcudbrightshire at the turn of the 19th century. The first exhibition was held in 1922 and has been held each year with the exception of several of the war years.

Among the society’s earliest members were the distinguished artists Hornel, Oppenheimer, E.A. Taylor and Jessie M. King, as well as Chris J. Fergusson and others. Today the Society still has many professional artists as members as well as amateurs, and the society has similar objectives of promoting members' work and encouraging wide participation in the arts and crafts.

To celebrate our 90th Anniversary the Society is holding a Dinner on 15th February and we are delighted to welcome the grandson of Chris Fergusson, Jim Henderson, to speak.

We are always pleased to hear from anyone interested in becoming a member and younger members are particularly welcome.

A major selected exhibition is held in Dumfries each year, showing 300 or more works. A smaller Christmas exhibition is unselected and allows members to exhibit two works. We will also have an exhibition at the Castle Douglas gallery in the Spring.

The society provides a winter programme of six demonstrations and talks given by professional artists and a summer programme of member painting days tutored by professionals as well as a bi-annual magazine. www.dumfriesandgallowayfineartsociety.org.uk
