Call for young people to represent Nithsdale.

On behalf of the event organisers in DG, I am contacting you about a special opportunity for 9 young people from Nithsdale to take part in the International  Youth Summit taking place in the region between the 6-9 June 2014.

What is the opportunity?
The summit is an opportunity for 9 young people from our area to take part in an international event, where they will engage in activities, workshops and social functions with young people from Australia, Ghana, Malawi, Mauritius, Northern Ireland to name but a few of the participating countries.

The delegate (basic requirements)
The young person should be an individual with a commitment to community and voluntary work and have a developed interest in global citizenship as well as being at least 16 years of age or older. All usual parental permissions apply.

Time commitment…
The young person will participate in activities over a three day period so must be available to attend from Friday 6th - Monday 9th June 2014 (i.e. must be free from commitments e.g. school/exams/college/work at that time to attend). There is a requirement that the they would stay with the rest of the delegates at the Youth Summitaccommodation.

Where will the event take place?
Summit delegates will engage in activities at the summit venues including DGOne , Dumfries and be accommodated in a special camp set up for all delegates in newly refurbished Dock Park Dumfries.

The perks!
All food, accommodation and entertainment is free! A great opportunity to make links with young people across theCommonwealth, meet inspirational people, think and act globally – enjoy the entertainment provided.

What next?
Please promote this opportunity around your Nithsdale networks, and to any young people that you work with who you feel meet the criteria of a delegate (outlined above), and would represent Nithsdale.

In order to be selected for one of these 9 places, the young person needs to answer the following questions using whatever medium they feel comfortable with (e.g. a short video, audio, written piece) and being as creative as they like:

·         Please introduce yourself, including your name, age, where you live, your current situation (ie at school/college/unemployed/employed etc) AND if you were to be a cartoon character who would you be and why?

·         Tell us about your local community and your involvement in it
e.g. your volunteering, church, civic, youth/community group activities
·         Why would you like to attend the Commonwealth Youth Summit?

·         What would you like to get out of the Commonwealth Youth Summit?

·         How would you take your Youth Summit experiences back into your local community in order to develop your community involvement and sustain youth leadership?

Applicants can either email their submissions to youth.summit@dumgal.gov.ukOR drop off submissions with their name and contact details included to Oasis Youth Centre, Newall Terrace, Dumfries.

The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Monday 5th May 2014.

If we are oversubscribed with submissions from which we can’t select the 9 Nithsdale representatives, we will shortlist based on these submissions and then invite the shortlisted young people to an informal group work session to be held on 13th May  from 7 - 9pm, at Oasis Youth Centre, Dumfries.
Please ensure those applying are also available on this date in case they are shortlisted.

If you have any young people who are interested in this opportunity but live out with Nithsdale please direct them to their local area’s CLD team who will be able to assist them to apply for that area’s allocated places.

Please feel free to contact us via youth.summit@dumgal.gov.uk with any informal enquires

Thanks for your assistance in helping us promote this exciting opportunity!
