D&G Arts Festival - Song of the Oak and the Ivy and The Black That I Am

May is a bit of a manic month for the D&G art crowd, the suns out, Winter is fading to memory and the D & G Arts Festival is on it's way!

Òran Mór’s ground-breaking lunchtime theatre programme, A Play, a Pie and a Pint, makes a rare stop-over in New Galloway with reflections on the drama of one of the world’s most celebrated Jamaican playwrights.
Jamaica playwright Karl O’Brian Williams. His award-winning play, The Black That I Am, will feature in Òran Mór’s fantastic programme, this is an exciting opportunity to see and hear four quality actors reflecting on the themes of Karl O’Brian Williams’ outstanding award-winning play, The Black That I Am.
Featuring the monologues of Katrina Beckford, Tunji Lucas, Linden Walcott-Burton and Angela Wynter, Voices from the Black That I Am is a theatrical meditation of questions on issues of blackness, gender, sexuality and nationalism. It is the personal journey of a black Caribbean immigrant navigating foreign territory. Underlying each monologue is Sankofa: the Ghanaian philosophy of looking back to go forward.
The event takes place at The CatStrand, New Galloway, on Sunday, 18 May, and will take the form of Òran Mór’s popular lunchtime programme of watching a play while enjoying a pint and a pie in an informal, relaxed and cheerful setting.

"Song of the Oak and the Ivy: interesting title you may think for a new harp composition from Scotland`s leading jazz / traditional harper. So did I when Corrina first asked me to be one of the players and presented me with sheets of amazing (if somewhat scary) music to learn.
Crazy first rehearsal followed by MUCH private practice got us all up to scratch and our first performance was a brilliant but exhausting triumph in front of the home crowd at Edinburgh International Harp Festival three years ago.
Since then we`ve toured it around from Cromarty to Brittany, learnt all 45 minutes of it by heart, bonded over post gig dominoes, shared many bottles of red, extracted readings from the story to give context and played into the subtleties of the spaces between the notes. Have a listen to extracts on Corrina`s Sound Cloud site for a flavour.
If you thought you didn`t like harps but love jazz, classical, traditional or any good music, come and have a listen."
