Exhibitions at Annan and Dumfries Museum

From Fiona Wilson

New exhibitions and events

Over the past few weeks the museum team have been busy installing two new exhibitions. We are also preparing our new programme full of exhibitions and events to keep the winter blues at bay. A warm welcome awaits you at all of our venues and we hope to see you soon.

“Home by Christmas” opened at Annan Museum on Saturday 23 August, the 100th anniversary of the day that the British Expeditionary Force first engaged enemy forces at the Battle of Mons in France.

During the early stages of World War One most people in Britain thought that the fighting would be over quickly and that troops sent off to battle would be “home by Christmas”. This exhibition of local stories, recruitment posters and memorabilia is part of a series of exhibitions planned across Dumfries and Galloway museums commemorating a past generation caught up in The Great War.

“Strandlines” opens at Dumfries Museum on Saturday 6 September

From plastic ducks to mermaid’s purses and mysterious messages in bottles, a wide variety of weird and wonderful objects wash up on the coastline of Dumfries and Galloway. The Strandlines exhibition at Dumfries Museum showcases the local coastline and explores the diversity of natural and man-made objects found on its beaches.

Bouncy ball washed up on the Solway coastline.
A launch event for the Strandlines exhibition will take place at 7pm on Thursday 11 September at Dumfries Museum and everyone is welcome to come along. Nic Coombey, Coastal Ranger with Solway Firth Partnership, will talk about natural and man-made objects found tossed up on the Solway Strandline. Answers will be provided for those difficult questions: What is it? Why is it here? How did it get there? Become a curious beachcomber and discover what the tides reveal. Refreshments will be served. If you would like to come along please give Dumfries Museum a call on 01387 253374.
