Sanitise at Big Burns Supper

A woman alone in her bathroom – what does it mean to be clean and what does it mean to be dirty?

Sanitise is a highly visual theatre show coming to Big Burns Supper on Tuesday 27^th January at 1pm. This is first stop in a nationwide Scottish tour, following a successful Fringe run in August where the production won a Scotsman Fringe First Award and was nominated for an Arches Brick Award.

Set in the most private of places, where dirt can be flushed away in an instant, Sanitise is a theatrical journey through the fantasy world of one woman alone in her bathroom. Combining physical theatre, dance, music and illustration, Sanitise is a quirky, imaginative production without words, looking at a part of life we never talk about and follows one woman's quest for domestic and sexual liberation. Disgusted by much of the outside world, her bathroom has become a sanctuary of cleanliness and an unlikely venue for self-expression. But there is something dark living beneath the bath and as her inner and outer life is revealed we discover a woman torn between fantasy and fear as she negotiates her relationship with literal and figurative filth.  What does it mean to be clean and what does it mean to be dirty?

Sanitise was created by two young Edinburgh based artists, Caitlin Skinner and Melanie Jordan, who aim to make bold visual theatre which opens up the audience's imaginations, their sense of humour and ultimately their minds.

Oriental Dance Exercise Classes in Wigtown

We moved to the Machars a year ago and I have been doing a weekly ODE (Oriental Dance Exercise) class ever since. I am not very good with advertising so its usually just me and a couple of dedicated ladies, so I would love to reach a wider audience because IT IS SOOOOOO MAGICAL the way these movements ( circles, spirals, 8,s, etc) up and down spine and extremities, enhance happiness and well-being of body mind and spirit!

Of course they do, because these are the movements of the UNIVERSE! the movements of the ATOMS! i can only strongly strongly recommend it!we move tooooooo little in our so called "civilised" society-this is EASY, MEDITATIVE, REPETiTIVE,(no choreography-no memorising or counting steps,as this distracts from the essence of the movement) it  also gives you a six pack after some time, is a really good exercise for all the  internal organs(womens especially!) strenghtens core muscles, improves balance, coordination, posture, breathing, flexibility, AND JOY de VIVRE!

2014/15 Made in Scotland Showcase Funding for Music, Theatre & Dance

Made in Scotland is a partnership initiative run by Creative Scotland in collaboration with the Federation of Scottish Theatre (FST), the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society and the Scottish Music Centre (SMC). Funded through the Scottish Government's Edinburgh Festival Expo Fund, the initiative is a showcase designed to raise the international profile of Scottish artists through enabling Scottish dance and theatre artists to present ambitious work to international promoters at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Through Made in Scotland, funding is provided for the presentation of:
High quality and artistically ambitious productions which promote the work of Scottish artists and companies which are 'export-ready' for the international market.
Productions which involve Scottish artists and companies in international co-productions, or in collaboration with international artists or companies.

Funding is available in two main strands: Music and Theatre & Dance. Whilst there is no minimum or maximum level of grant that may be applied for, the total budgets for 2014/15 are as follows:
Music: approximately £75,000.
Theatre & Dance: approximately £220,000.

Applications can come from individual artists, companies/organisations, ensembles, promoters, bands and venues. Individuals must be able to demonstrate that their principal home is in Scotland and companies and organisations must have their headquarters in Scotland.
The Fringe Expo Fund is intended to support the costs of presenting work at the Fringe (as opposed to the costs of commissioning and creating new work). It will provide support towards the costs involved in presenting a production at the Fringe and mitigate against the financial risks this involves.

Information sessions are being held for prospective applicants on the following dates:
15 October 2014 (Edinburgh)
16 October 2014 (Glasgow)
The deadline for applications is 24 November 2014.

Inspire Youth Dance at Douglas Ewart School

I am writing to you to let you know about Inspire Youth Dance, Wigtownshire's new youth dance company. Inspire Youth Dance is a not for profit community group.

Inspire Youth Dance meets at the Douglas Ewart High School on Thursdays after school.

From Thursday 25th September we will be running Junior and Company classes.

The junior group runs 3.45pm-4.30pm for P6-S1 pupils and the first session is free. The junior sessions will be supervised by Mrs Emma Louise Abel (was Barrass) and led by secondary school pupils who have Level 1 Award in Dance Leadership.

The company class runs 4.30pm-6.30pm, age 12+ and the first session is free. Company sessions are lead by Mrs Emma Abel and members take class in a variety of dance styles, develop their dance and leadership skills, create new dances and have the opportunity to perform at community events and get involved with national events such as events organised by YDance.

Dreamtime Residency in Selkirk - Spring 2015

Applications are now open for a week-long ‘Dream Time’ residency at The Studio On The Green, in Selkirk. 

The residency is a joint initiative between Dance Base and Scottish Borders Council’s Arts Development (Performing Arts Partnership). Previous Dream Time residencies have been awarded to Ian Spink (2012) and Tess Letham (2013).

Ian Spink said of his Dream Time residency: “...the single studio space has a warm and friendly atmosphere. Jenna Agate was available as a sensitive and valuable ‘outside eye’ and also host to our work during our 5 days there. As an easily accessible studio space in which to create work, uninterrupted, this place was ideal. The rural location created a calming effect on us all...”

The 2015 artists in residence will benefit from free accommodation in addition to a residency fee.  The successful applicant will have the choice of 5 days (Monday – Friday or Wednesday – Sunday) between 2 and 29 March 2015for the residency.

Trailblaze Dance Galloway's Dance Trail

87 Miles - Physical Theatre Workshops

Ryan Youth Theatre in Stranraer is running two FREE physical theatre workshops at the Ryan Centre on 9th and 16th of March with Mahri Riley. Mahri is a performer, producer, director, and movement facilitator based in Glasgow. The workshops are open to anyone aged from 14 to 25 and are part of the 87 Miles project. 

This project is supported by Wigtown Festival Company and funded by The Holywood Trust.

We meet to connect with other dance and movement practitioners. We set up dance events to encourage everyone to dance on a regular basis, whatever age or ability. 

Supported by CABN we have had our first Day of Dance which hosted full classes of many different dance disciplines we have in the region. Including free introductory sessions of Biodanza, Margaret Morris Movement, Zumba, Pop Dance, Arabian to Hollywood and Contact Improvisation. Thankyou to everyone who led workshops, took part, and provided information about their classes. It all made a great day.

Our quarterly meetings usually take place on a Sunday for two and a half hours with an hour of practical dance session.

We invite one member to lead a session for about an hour. We are beginning to engage with and understand the wide variety of styles and disciplines we have in Dumfries and Galloway.

Currently we are supported by CABN (Creative Arts Business Network). CABN have provided funds for Hall Hire. We do not pay for members to lead the sessions at the meetings. We are constituting the Network so we can raise funds to put on events, continue meeting and develop a website to act as a porthole for Dance and Movement in Dumfries and Galloway.

Art, Science and Sound in California

What do you get when you combine students working with environment studies, engineering science and theatre arts? The answer is the “Soundscape Project” which is an original dance piece showcasing the sounds of natural soundscapes. For the Fall Dance Concert 2013, the SSU Department of Theatre Arts and Dance will present unique, new dance works along with original music. Funded in part through the Green Music Center’s Academic Integration Grant and the Sonoma County Community Foundation Grant, the “Soundscape Project” uses the environment of sounds that were recorded at the Fairfield Osborn Preserve, which is a nature reserve located on Sonoma Mountain that spans over 400 acres.
Dr. Bernie Krause, a bioacoustics expert, provided training to students within the Environmental Studies and Planning department to record a wide range of natural and man-made sounds found on the preserve. Using handheld recorders, students recorded sounds between May and June to sample biophonic, geophonic and anthrophonic sounds. Sounds were also captured at coastal areas and the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve.
Engineering students then archived and edited the recordings into a sound library from which composer Jesse Olsen Bay created an original score. Bay is a local Bay Area composer who has done work for numerous dance companies and is also on staff at SSU.

Christine Cali, an instructor and Bay Area choreographer, Kristen Daley, the director of the dance program, along with SSU dance students, used Bay’s score as inspiration for the interpretive performance which uses the changing ecology of Sonoma County, video and acoustic recordings to create a merger of art and science. “The idea started with Claudia Luke, the SSU Preserve Director,” said Daley. “She had this great idea about interplay between art and science.”
This is the first year of the academic integration grant. Luke consulted with Dr. Krause before writing the grant that would combine biology, engineering, arts and dance.
“We created this performance that reflected the place and the sounds to try and connect to the soundscapes,” added Daley.

A Day of Dance

On Sunday 17th November from 2pm-8pm there will be a Day of Dance celebration at St Ninian’s Church Hall in Castle Douglas. Anyone over the age of 16 can come along and try out different types of dance such as Biodanza, Margaret Morris Movement, Zumba, Pop dance, Arabian to Hollywood, and Contact Improvisation for free. The Day of Dance is organised by the Dance and Movement Practitioners Network with support from Sara Lockwood and Sara Jackets in their role as Creative Business Advocates for Dance with the CABN (Creative Arts Business Network) New Work Project. The aim of the network is to bring dance professionals, businesses and organisations together to raise the profile of dance within the region and highlight the wide range of opportunities to dance available.
