Outline 
A key to mental and physical health and well-being is an active lifestyle. Support to help patients enjoy the outdoors is built into the new hospital facilities. This project helps reinforce these aims by providing distance waymarks, or “milestones” around the campus as prominent landmarks with possible supportive text. These will be benchmarks for activity and pleasing visual objects in themselves. 

This project is to design, manufacture and install these waymarking interventions in the landscape to mark significant distances. Starting at key location points (such as the main entrance/car parking etc.) distances (10m 25m 50m 100m) will be annotated by sculptural interventions. Patients participating in rehabilitation programmes could aim to reach ever increasing milestone distance targets as part of this programme. The sculptures are visual punctuations, creating a place for contemplation and rest within the landscape. The locations may have additional supporting text clearly delineating distances in an illuminating and engaging way, for example “A harbour porpoise can travel around 10 metres in a second”. 
Whilst the text and sculptural forms to be made will be agreed as part of the design process, they should relate directly back to the landscape, flora and fauna of the Ayrshire coast as directed by the strategic goals of the Arts Strategy.

Contractual Payment Details

Base budget comprises of £ 17,430 Of the budget it is assumed that £13,680 will be used for manufacture and install of the sculptures. This assumes £3,750 is available for artists design fees.

A further additional £1,200 is available for engineering certification or permissions if needed, and a modest sum is available for enabling works executed by the building contractor if required by the design agreed.

Destination Seating Area design Commission for North Ayrshire Community Hospital

Research has highlighted the importance of connections between inside and outside in design for health and wellbeing. Creating meaningful opportunities to enjoy the landscape is central to the “Points of View” Arts Strategy for North Ayrshire Community hospital. Additionally a key to mental and physical health is an active lifestyle. Support to help patients enjoy the outdoors is built into the new hospital facilities. This project helps reinforce these aims by providing a destination seating area encouraging all weather access to the landscape.

The sited structure will provide shelter and be open and light enough to offer safety and security. The design will integrate into landscaping contours and include a wheelchair accessible path and handrails. It is anticipated that the seating will need to be arranged to allow small groups of two or three a sense of place as well as individual seats.
The finished design should provide a beautiful sensory ‘place apart’ feature on the campus, encouraging access to outdoor location. Additional benefit may be gained from short ramp and stairs with bespoke handrails to encourage mobility and light exercise.

Contractual Payment Details
Base budget comprises of £ 27,250. 
Of the budget it is assumed that £17,000 will be used for manufacture and install of the seating area and shelter. This assumes £5,750 is available for artists/design fees, and a further fee of £4,500 is available for engineering certification and permissions.

An allowance of £14,000 is available for enabling works executed by the Building Contractor if required by the design agreed.

Graphic and Design Commission from NHS Ayrshire and Arran

We are seeking and artist/designer or illustrator to develop three bespoke graphic outputs that will mesh with the way finding and interior strategy of the project. It is expected the selected artist/designer will work closely with the existing design team, building contractor, and their suppliers, as appropriate.

Project One: Reception Desk frontage 

Develop a design based on the sea and coastline around Ayrshire that will form part of the frontage for the main reception desk that welcomes everyone to the new hospital. After consultation an acrylic panel with a CNC etched design on the back face, illuminated by back or side lighting is proposed. The artist’s role will be to research and source imagery from the natural world of the Ayrshire coast and create a marine design to be cut on the panel.

Project Two: Wayfinding Iconography 

To design and develop iconographic imagery which could be based on or influenced by the name of the building and/or the individual ward names that will be integrated into the signage and way finding. Alternatively it could be based on the flora and fauna of Ayrshire. In view of the architectural heritage of existing buildings on the site an Art Deco theme may further inform the design work.

Project Three: Vinyl Manifestations 

Modern buildings benefit from large glazed areas. This has a dramatic and important positive effect in light levels and psychological connections to surrounding landscape. However in order for a building as complex as a hospital to function adequately different levels of visibility are required in specific locations. The requirements vary from full screening to minimal DDA compliance glazing dots. This project is to design Landscape based vinyl manifestation to screen glazing as deemed necessary. This will be rolled out across campus in targeted locations that require additional glazing to be screened.

The recently formed 'South West Scotland Piping and Drumming Academy' is looking for a logo, they are offering £100 prize for a winning design!! 
Open to all ages and abilities.

Create a logo and /or typography that includes the letters SWSPDA and the full name 'South West Scotland Piping and Drumming Academy'.

The wining design will be memorable and relevant and will be applied to various stationary e.g. application form, letterhead and business card. The design will be used online and on paper. It could be highly graphic or with a hand drawn feel...

Carnegie Prize for Design and Wellbeing

The Carnegie Trust are inviting nominations from Scotland and Northern Ireland for projects where the design of a townscape has been improved by a community group for the benefit of fellow citizens...

They say:

We are now inviting Expressions of Interest from community groups and registered charities. To enter please download the Expression of Interest form and Prize leaflet. The deadline is 17 March at 12 noon.

The Carnegie Prize for Design and Wellbeing will be awarded in 2014 to four exciting, community-led, townscape projects in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The winning projects will involve the development of public space in a town and seek to improve local wellbeing.

Our four winners will each receive £2,500 and be featured as good practice case studies in a Carnegie UK Trust publication. An additional prize of £1,000 will be awarded to one of the four projects to recognise outstanding work. The prizes will be awarded in partnership with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) and the Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA).

The Prizes aims to stimulate interest in how well designed public space, developed with local communities at the helm can improve wellbeing. Winning projects will demonstrate how good design can create opportunities: for improved health; local regeneration; skills development; community enterprises and social interaction.

Recent Carnegie UK Trust research into local environmental problems, such as litter and vandalism, highlighted the long lasting impact that a poor quality local environment can have on individual and community wellbeing. Pride in Place: Tackling Incivilities showcased just how effective community led action can be in bringing about positive change.

The Prize winners will be announced at the 2014 RIAS convention on 16 May 2014.
Expressions of interest from constituted community and voluntary groups and registered charities are now invited. Learning from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games: Transferrable lessons for placemaking and design in Scotland 

Design Skills Symposium, Glasgow, 20-21 March 2014 

As Glasgow prepares to host the 20th Commonwealth Games, the Design Skills Symposium will seek learning from and deliver transferrable lessons for all of Scotland's places. The investment and initiatives related to the games are influencing change in many places and communities. With just over one month before we get together in Glasgow for this year’s Design Skills Symposium we wanted to let you know about our latest news on our keynote speaker, our facilitators and the latest programme. The Design Skills Symposium is a practical two-day collaborative learning event offering those involved the opportunity to build the knowledge, capacity and networks to deliver better places by design. 

 The programme for the event is now available here . We are delighted to announce that the day one keynote speaker is Geoffrey London, the Government Architect for Victoria, Australia. He will speak about Australia’s experiences of the placemaking legacy of the Commonwealth Games as well as introducing how design is being used to catalyse exciting changes in Melbourne and the state of Victoria. Under One Roof - AAS in Dumfries

And it's all happening in Dumfries this month, Applied Arts Scotland are also rocking up with an event at Gracefield on the 21st - please register to attend here 

In this specially put together free program Sculptor David Murphy will talk about his recent commissions with Textile designer Catherine Aitken, for the new Sutherland/Hussey designed Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

The project sponsored by the Edward Marshall trust was for furniture with a twist. Will Levi Marshall the trusts chair said:

“What’s really exciting about this commission is we are working with a sculptor and textile designer to make furniture…………. not only that but the final designs will be made at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop by the sculptors who practice there. This cross disciplinarian and hands on approach to design is pretty unique and, with the skills of Catherine and David, has resulted in stunning, restrained, utilitarian and beautiful furniture.“

David will talk through the design process and challenges Catherine and he the faced and answer questions about their practice.

Our new CEO at Creative Scotland liked it so much she bought the t-shirt (well coffee table!).

Additionally there will be a brief talk about Applied Arts Scotland and SAU explaining what these charitys have to offer the sector. Event organised in association with Spring fling and SAU

Spring Fling at The Lighthouse

Remember the Spring Fling crowdfunding campaign to raise money to exhibit D&G artists' work out with the region....well....all power to those Spring Fling folk because..

D&G|OUT at Glasgow's Lighthouse is the first of three national showcases for 2014. The others are at The BiscuitFactory, Newcastle, 9 April to 18 May and James Harvey Fine Art, London, 23-6 April. 

 

D&G|OUT will feature pieces by 18 ceramicists, jewellers, textile designers, printmakers and others with a national and international profile. Among them are glassmaker Amanda Simmons and potter Andy Priestman.

All are either based in Dumfries and Galloway, a large rural area of south-west Scotland, or have their roots in the area.

The exhibition is produced by Spring Fling, Scotland’s leading visual art and craft open studio event.

Crichton Conversations 2013/14 Lecture Programme

  Innovation and Design in Scotland: A celebration.

Given the strength of the reputation of this region as a flourishing centre of excellence in arts and crafts, the Crichton Conversation on Tuesday 29^th October 2013  should be of huge interest and relevance locally. Guest speaker, Professor Philip Long, Director of the V&A Dundee project will examine the impact and importance of innovation and design and its impact on the Scottish economy. He will also bring us up to date on the exciting V&A project based in Dundee.

Philip was previously Senior Curator of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. From 2008 he also led the National Galleries of Scotland’s prestigious Artist Rooms project. An acknowledged expert in Scottish art and design he has organised exhibitions and written highly praised publications on William Gillies, Anne Redpath, the Scottish Colourists, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and on the architect Basil Spence.

The lecture is sponsored by the Solway Centre, University of Glasgow, Dumfries.

Commenting, Dame Barbara Kelly, Foundation Convenor said “The Foundation is delighted that the Solway Centre is our partner for this discussion.  It is always stimulating to have someone as expert as Philip Long to speak on a subject which is important to the local community. We hope to have a good turnout to hear the talk and participate in the questions and debate which will follow.  Why not join us for the evening?”
