The second round of the South of Scotland Visual Artists and Craft Makers Awards are open for applications

Dumfries & Galloway Council, Scottish Borders Council and Dumfries and Galloway Chamber of Arts in partnership with Creative Scotland are running a combined Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards Scheme 2014-2015.  The scheme is for individual artists and makers living and working in the Scottish Borders or Dumfries and Galloway. Artists and makers are eligible to apply for awards towards the cost of developing their creative practice.  Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to their work – whether they are at an early or established stage of their practice - and to advancing their skills and ideas.  The intention is that the fund will have a significant impact on applicants creative activity, and take their practice forward.

FUNDS AVAILABLE:

 

Individual awards between £500 and £1,500 are available, which will assist artists and makers to develop and extend their own personal practice. Applicants are advised to request the appropriate amount required for the project, rather than automatically apply for the maximum grant available.  The Awards Panel reserves the right to offer an amount different to that requested.

Applicants can apply for up to 90% of the total cost of their project. The applicant must fund a minimum of 10% of the project funds. Successful applicants will receive 85% of the awarded grant on signed acceptance of their contract. The final 15% of the grant will only be paid upon completion and receipt of an Evaluation Form at the end of their project.

Bea Last to represent D&G on the VACMA awards panel

Bea Last is taking up the role of DG Unlimited representative on the Visual Artists and Makers Award Scheme selection panel.
The scheme, which brings together Creative Scotland, local authorities and arts organisations, makes grants of between £500 and £1,500 and will help artists and makers develop their practice. After her appointment Bea said: ''I have received so much support myself in the past that I look forward to giving some of my experience and knowledge back into our community.''

Panel members have been chosen for their:
• depth of experience in a visual arts practice
• knowledge of range of visual arts practice
• understanding of the Visual Artists and Makers Award Scheme.
Bea had all the qualifications needed, and more.

She has been based in Dumfries & Galloway for 19 years and is a practicing professional visual artist who has exhibited widely across the UK and abroad, with works held both in the private and corporate sector. Recent commissions have included ‘The British Art Project’ Corinthia Hotel London W1. & ‘The Dokkae Project’, Jeddah. In 2013, she had a solo show at The linenhall Art Centre, Ireland & more recently work being shown at ‘ArtExpo N.Y’ and ‘Spectrum Miami’ 2014.

Farewell to CABN (D+G)

It is traditional at this time of year to list those we have lost during the year - a last minute entrant on that list in D+G is CABN (NB this is the D+G CABN only....the Borders version is going from strength to strength). Dear All

The CABN project ends on the 31st December, and Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Business and Enterprise Team will be looking afresh at the business support to the creative industries in 2014.  An independent evaluation of the project is currently being carried out by Tait Enterprise Development Limited, and we would therefore really appreciate it if you could share your views on what you have valued and what we could have done better  by completing the following short survey ( 5-10 minutes at the most).

The information that we are collecting will be considered going forward and will be fed into our review of services.

Borders CABN celebrate a successful 2013

CABN's current funding and 'New Work' project come to a close on 31st December, and the CABN team have decided to host an event to  celebrate with you, and showcase images from the wealth of projects that have happened and work that has been made in 2013 here in the Borders.

This is an informal event in the beautiful old church space at MAC Arts in Galashiels which is under development as a new venue for performance and arts in the Borders.

To those interested in, or know of someone who might Artistic Practice Peer Advisory Sessions CABN (Creative Arts Business Network) is piloting a Peer Advisor Pool that gives you the opportunity to sit down with someone who is successful in their field, and happy to share the benefit of their experience with you.

Borders CABN Commissioning Evaluation

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) is seeking quotes from consultants to undertake an evaluation of the Scottish Borders programme for the New Work (CABN) project.   This project phase ran from January 2013, and completes 31st Dec 2013.
CABN is currently funded to December 2013 to deliver a range of activities under the project heading 'New Work'.  This New Work programme is funded by Scottish Borders LEADER programme and Creative Scotland.   The project is based in Tower Mill, Hawick and is managed  by a part-time Creative Leader (Mary Morrison) and a part time Clerical Assistant (Kay McCluskey). 
CABN supports individual creative businesses and creative organisations in the Scottish Borders. CABN is a network and information sharing project and supports creative individuals and organisations working in the fields of:

Visual Arts • Craft • Literature • Film • Music • Performing Arts

Timescale & Fee
There is a budget of £2,000 available for this work and the following expertise is a minimum requirement:

• A comprehensive understanding of the place of the creative sector in a rural setting and its economic and social value
• Experience of creative sector project evaluation
• Experience of undertaking appraisal of business support projects 

The deadline for the delivery of the evaluation report is Tuesday 31st December 2013.

Please provide electronic copies only of your proposal and costings  to mmorrison@scotborders.gov.uk   by midnight on Wednesday 4th December 2013.    Quotes should not be more than 6 pages of A4, and any additional information may be provided in the form of an appendix.  Please structure your responses under the following headings:

• Costs, by day, team member, including travel but excluding VAT.

A Day of Dance

On Sunday 17th November from 2pm-8pm there will be a Day of Dance celebration at St Ninian’s Church Hall in Castle Douglas. Anyone over the age of 16 can come along and try out different types of dance such as Biodanza, Margaret Morris Movement, Zumba, Pop dance, Arabian to Hollywood, and Contact Improvisation for free. The Day of Dance is organised by the Dance and Movement Practitioners Network with support from Sara Lockwood and Sara Jackets in their role as Creative Business Advocates for Dance with the CABN (Creative Arts Business Network) New Work Project. The aim of the network is to bring dance professionals, businesses and organisations together to raise the profile of dance within the region and highlight the wide range of opportunities to dance available.

The Business of Writing - 30th November

Dumfries & Galloway’s Creative Arts Business Network (CABN) is pleased to announce a one day conference for the region’s writers. Free to attend, but with places limited to 25, the conference will take place on Saturday 30^th November 2013, from 10am to 4pm at Castle Douglas Town Hall in Castle Douglas.

The Business of Writing conference is an opportunity for Dumfries & Galloway based writers and publishers to learn the practical skills essential for self-publishing and/or developing current publishing businesses. The focus of the conference is to enable writers to take full advantage of the dramatic changes which have occurred within the publishing industry over the last few years, including the increasing important of eBooks.

The conference will be led by the region’s Creative Business Advocate for Literature, Inga McVicar who has extensive experience of the industry. Highlights include:

·       How to format eBooks with Wayne Noble (University of Central Lancashire)

·       Preparing to Publish with Inga McVicar (Dumfries and Galloway’s Creative Business Advocate for Literature)

·       First steps to self-publishing with Rosemary Gemmell (published and self-published Author)

Film networking event for CABN - 27 November

Belle Doyle (Creative Business Advocate for Film) is organising a film networking event on 27 November at the Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre for CABN, for everyone interested in writing for screen, filmmaking, and internet distribution of their material.  Experienced writer/producer/director David Griffith will be giving a talk on low-budget filmmaking, using his latest film Timelock (part- filmed in Dumfries) as a working example. He'll also be talking about new ways of building audiences and film distribution.  Details about the event are on the CABN Facebook page

The networking lunch starts at 1 pm, with David speaking in the afternoon, and the screening of the film begins at 5 pm.  It's free but people should book a place at the RBCFT - 01387 264808.

Peer Advisors to Support Creative Businesses

CABN (the Creative Arts Business Network) is developing a pool of peer advisors to offer specialist advice to creative individuals and businesses. This is a trial initiative that will initially run until 31^st December.

We are looking for experienced individuals from the creative sector, who are successful in their field and willing to share the benefit of their knowledge. You may be an experienced practitioner for example an artist, writer, craft maker, performer , musician or filmmaker, or have a track record successfully promoting work and marketing creative work for example as a gallerist, publisher or promoter.  If you have skills and experience to share we would be interested in hearing from you.

The service will be demand led, and advisors will be paid an hourly rate when their skills are called upon.

Photography Advice Sessions for Artists and Makers

The Creative Arts Business Network (CABN), in association with Gracefield Arts Centre and Spring Fling is offering Photography Advice Sessions for artists and craft makers.

Shannon Tofts and Euan Adamson will be at Gracefield Arts Centre on 11th and 12^th September. Shannon is an Edinburgh based photographer who is renowned throughout Scotland for his photographs of craft work. His sessions will therefore focus upon 3D work such as glass, ceramics, textiles.  Euan is based locally and has built up a strong reputation photographing art and craft work. His sessions will focus primarily upon 2D work such as paintings and prints.

Ed Baxter has many years of experience as a product photographer and will be available on 11^th September to photograph both art and craft work at his studio at Bank House Studio, 95a Drumlanrig Street in Thornhill.

This is a great opportunity to receive advice and have your work photographed by a professional product photographer at an affordable price.  It would ideally suit anybody requiring photographs to support their Spring Fling application, or needing high quality photographs to promote their work.  The advice session and photography of the work is free but there will be a charge for photographs.  For more information and to book yourself a place please email Stephanie Carrick on Stephanie.carrick@dumgal.gov.uk   We strongly recommend that you book early to avoid disappointment.

Go and See - Independent Cinema Office

CABN is offering to cover the fees, travel and accommodation costs through its ‘Go and See’ Budget for up to 3 practitioners from Dumfries and Galloway to attend the ICO Autumn Screening Days which will be held at the Watershed in Bristol, 2- 4 November 2013. 

ICO Screening Days is an industry event for people who work or volunteer in independent cinemas, mixed arts venues, film festivals and film societies, to come and watch films before their release date, to inform programming and marketing plans for the upcoming months. 

It is an opportunity to preview titles that will be hitting screens in early 2014, and to meet and network with fellow colleagues and gain advice from the industry experts on hand throughout the event.
