I remember a trip to the West Freugh base outside Stranraer a decade or so ago with a then business partner to look at potential locations for a humongous American television series, that would have transformed Galloway, the base and poured money into the economy. Unfortunately Mr Spielberg opted for somewhere on the south coast, somewhere within commuting distance for his all star cast. London's gain - Stranraer's loss. One of the highlights of the trip was look at the projection room, where RAF technicians watched high speed film of bombing runs. The enormous cameras they used captured images at 2000 frames per second. The imagery was fantastic, the equipment worth countless thousands. Today with advances in digital technology leaping at a pace that makes this mornings latest camera groundbreaking over breakfast yet obsolete by dinner, all manner of techno jiggery pokery is becoming eminently affordable. I also remember a visit to West Freugh about a decade ago! (Wasn't the same trip was it?) We were wanting advice on how to blow up a car reasonably safely as a public art event. The most pertinent piece of information was the the experts in the field could be found across the water in Belfast... However, I too was gobsmacked by the film technology and even more by the generous and enthusuastic guys who showed us round (sounds like they must have done a fair bit of that). They also had a weapons museum there, full of ingenious 'anti-personnel' devices for all occasions. There was some squirming when I mentioned the taboo word 'kill'. We never did manage to blow up a car. Oh, he film clip's OK too.
