Projects presented will be:
ART AND THE BIOSPHERE
Ed
Forest: The landscape of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere
is rich in variety, beauty, culture and folklore. It’s no wonder then
that the area has long been a place where creative minds have found
inspiration.
ZERO FOOTPRINT
Morag
Paterson: Zero Footprint is a body of work created collaboratively by
landscape photographers Morag Paterson and Ted Leeming. The images are
taken over a three and a half year period from precisely the same
location at their hillside studio in the Glenkens area of Dumfries and
Galloway. Initiating a conversation between working creatively with a
minimal carbon footprint and how that itself impacts on creativity, they
explore the landscape through the viewfinder.
GROWING
Charles
Poulsen: Already known for his ambitious landscape projects - his
‘growing sculptures’ - such as the 2005 ‘Point of Resolution’ on the
Southern Upland Way above Innerleithen, ‘Host’ at Gracefield Arts Centre
and ‘Black is White’ in Hawick. Charlie will talk about his approach to
art and the landscape.
IRIS: PLACE, IDENTITY, MEMORY:
Jeremy
Carlisle: IRIS a Dumfries and Galloway-based collective is interested
in the artists’ book as a medium. An exhibition of international works
develop the idea of ‘place’ as an area suspended at the centre of a
multi-dimensional web made up of culture, memory, landscape and time.
The exhibition itself will be showing over the weekend at The Bakehouse
in Gatehouse High Street.
FIELDTRIPS, VIEWS AND VOICES: ENGAGING COMMUNITIES WITH THEIR LANDSCAPE
Anna
Johnson: The landscape of the region’s three National Scenic Areas have
inspired many artists and writers, and are now inspiring local people
too. Anna Johnson, the NSA Officer, will talk about the programme of
creative projects undertaken with schools and local groups to raise
awareness, understanding and enjoyment of these special places.
A PEOPLE’S ATLAS OF SOUTH WEST SCOTLAND
Julian
Watson: Launching a long-term project through the Mill on the Fleet to
encourage local communities in the Biosphere to pictorially map and
depict their own homelands. This foundation can then lead to, and frame,
other ways – artistic and scientific – of the map-representation of the
region.
