It’s
intricate, this sheep ree, links and passageways
to fox
them. The ghosts of sheep like water
run down
the face of Mulwhachar to pour
between
the rock walls of the Buchan Burn.
Environmental Art
Festival Scotland presents an opportunity to hear extracts from Jean
Atkin’s 2012 pamphlet from Roncadora Press, ‘The Dark Farms’, which was
inspired by the Galloway Forest Park. Jean’s
reading is on Sunday 1 September at 5pm at the Festival Yurt outside SNH
Cairnsmore of Fleet Reserve Office, Dromore Farm, Gatehouse of Fleet DG7
2BP. http://www.environmentalartfestivalscotland.com/event/jean-atkin-poetry-reading/
Here are poems about the darkness of the Forest’s nights,
its farming traditions and even the ghosts of its sheep. Jean worked on The Dark Farms for eight
months during 2011, walking the forest, talking to residents, climbing into
ruins and poring over old books and maps.
She received a grant from Arts Trust Scotland to complete the pamphlet
at Cove Park.
Jean Atkin’s first collection ‘Not Lost Since Last Time’ was
published by Oversteps Books in March 2013, and this August you can find
her being Poet in Residence at Logan Botanic Garden for Walking With
Poets.
