What is environmental art anyways?

http://www.environmentalartfestivalscotland.com/environmental-art-and-its-context/

A quick link across the EAFS blog, where Annie has been reflecting on how we define Environmental Art ahead of the festival at the end of this month...

"The term ‘environmental’ is a loaded word, and changes meaning depending on how it’s used and if we decide to capitalise it. It references the Environment, a term popularised as realisation of environmental impact and climate change became ever more apparent. This use of the term conjures mental images of trees, landscape, and Green approach to land use. It begins to reference new energy technologies, recycling, and edges towards the political. We understand the term environment in reference to our surroundings, the environment we live it. And of course, this is as variable as the term itself. But this is where it becomes more familiar to me – environment being the context.

And context is the lesser-emphasized word, but the more dominant. It forms the slogan and the working process of the Environmental Art department, and is repeated profusely by Wikipedia. And it is through the exploration of Environmental Artworks that the term ‘context’ becomes useful in drawing comparisons between my Central Belt education and my Dumfries and Galloway experience: the work responds to the context it is presented in."
