The Fertile Ground Conference will include a range of formal presentations on Saturday morning and ‘The Gathering In’ stalls and activities, children’s workshop and a series of artists presentations on Saturday afternoon. The first day will end with the ‘Celebration of the Sea Supper’ on Saturday evening. On Sunday morning there will be site visits to Belhaven Hospital Community Garden and a geologist led guided walk to Whitesands along the John Muir Way Link route. Sunday afternoon there will be a debate about environmental arts and the potential in our rural areas chaired by Chris Freemantle
Speakers: Chris Fremantle of Eco Arts Scotland; Matthew Dalziel of Dalziel + Scullion; Judy Spark of Grays School of Art; Natalie Walton, Head of Education, Hepworth Wakefield and Matt Baker of The Environmental Art Festival Scotland, Philip Revell of Sustaining Dunbar and Dee Davidson Marine Biologist and Dunbar Sci-fest.
There will also be artists presentations from Polarcap, Robbie Coleman & Jo Hodges, Hannah Imlach, Karen Gabbitas, Mary Morrison, Vicki Fleck ; Emma Herman-Smith, our artist in residence 2014, will also be represented.
Gathering In: North Light Arts are collaborating with Sustaining Dunbar on their annual ‘Gathering In’ event, which will take place 2 – 4pm on Saturday 25th October. This even is free and the marquee outside the Bleachingfield Centre will showcase many of the initiatives being taken by local people to make our town a more vibrant place to live. From local produce to beekeeping groups, apple press and writing workshops, local holidays by train or by bike, to less glamorous but essential worm composting and home insulation you will find someone local who knows all about it. Come and see some of what Dunbar has to offer.
Linking with the Gathering In, in the Main Hall of the Bleachingfield we will have a Children’s workshop of sea creatures from recycled materials; artist’s films, and local environmental architectural presentations from Art Space and Nature Graduates Akshaya Narsimhan and Diandra Saginatari.
Celebration of the Sea & Supper: You can also book separately to attend an amazing Celebration of the Sea Supper (£12 per person) at The Bleachingfield Centre on Saturday 25 October from 7 – 9pm. The menu will include a starter of sushi made from locally sourced food created by Mark Williams from Galloway Foraged Foods and a seasonal main course and desert created by The Ridge. Throughout the evening you will be entertained with poetry, performance and readings reflecting the theme of the sea, sustainability and slow food which will nourish and entertain you!
The Sunday journey: An environmental journey by coach to a unique project at Belhaven Hospital Community Garden and the landscapes of the John Muir Way which make Dunbar such a surprisingly inspiring and complex rural location. We will also experience a sensory slow walk and and artists presentation in the landscape, returning to the High St at the Dunbar Town House Museum and Gallery for an afternoon discussion led by our chair Chris Feemantle.

Creative Scotland, East Lothian Council and Scottish Natural Heritage have provided funding to enable North Light Arts to deliver this conference which aims to cultivate a fertile ground in which to discover the unique potential of our locality through engaging artists, environmental visionaries, science specialists and local organisations, developing an active process of dialogue, debate and cross pollination.
